Did Tom Brady Disrespect The Lombardi Trophy?

The videos from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super Bowl title parade went viral last week with one especially drawing a lot of reaction on social media. In this fun-filled clip, Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady was seen tossing the team’s Lombardi Trophy from one of the boats in the team’s water parade to another boat, where it was caught by a teammate.
This video, it seems, upset someone with a close connection to the game’s past, and leaving many to ask if Tom Brady truly disrespected the Lombardi Trophy by tossing it around like a football. What do you think: Should Tom Brady say he’s sorry, at least to one person; or should this person calm down and move on?

From Super Bowl I in 1967 all the way until 1994, Tiffany and Co made the NFL’s Lombardi Trophy, given to the team that won the Super Bowl, with silversmith Greg Grohs being credited with the trophy’s design. Last week after Tampa Bay won Super Bowl LV, the team had a water parade in the city, and Tom Brady tossed the trophy from his boat to another, giving the fans who watched a reason to cheer.
Greg’s daughter, Lorraine, was not one of those fans watching in person but did see the video from her Florida home and told a local television station:
“It just upset me that this trophy was disgraced and disrespected by being thrown as if it was a real football. I have a big history of this trophy being made by my father, and it’s such an honor and I know all the craftsmen that made it when my dad was there also at Tiffany’s, and it takes a lot of hard work.”
Lorraine Grohs says that Tom Brady’s trophy toss is insulting to her family’s legacy and would like an apology.

The younger Grohs is apparently hoping and expecting an apology from Tom Brady after his stunt caused her two sleepless night. Let’s hope that she doesn’t see the video of Rob Gronkowski using the trophy as a bat during the same celebration!

Let’s also be happy that Lorraine’s father wasn’t the one who designed the much older Stanley Cup, awarded to the winner of the NHL Final, since anyone who has heard stories about what happened to that trophy would need to know CPR if they told Ms. Grohs.

I can understand to a degree why Lorraine Grohs feels the way she does since the Lombardi Trophy means something different to her than it does to almost everyone else in the world. With that said, while it might have been a little risky for Brady to toss a trophy between boats, it was in no way disrespectful.
I wouldn’t expect anyone from Tiffany and Co to be upset, anymore than any of the people who have a hand in making the Lombardi Trophy, and I feel sad for Ms. Grohs in this case for taking this so personally. It’s also sad that society feels that too much fun, or fun of the wrong kind is somehow disrespectful to others or disgraceful to those who came before them. Tom Brady did something that was off the cuff and fun while also not being dangerous to anyone.
Let’s hope that Ms. Grohs is getting her sleep again with the knowledge that her family’s sports legacy is safe and that she has now had her 15 minutes of fame. Let’s also hope that next year, if someone does something crazy with the Lombardi Trophy, like have fun, she is sleeping then too, that way she won’t need to worry about feeling her family name has been disrespected.
